Youth and Apprentice Deer Hunting Weekend questions and answers can be found at: www. Resident or nonresident deer hunters 15 years of age and under and holders of a valid apprentice hunting license may take one antlerless deer per license year on days other than designated either-sex deer hunting days during the muzzleloading season s or the firearms season s in all counties.

This regulation is in addition to either-sex deer hunting days. For example, if a youth or apprentice deer hunter killed one or more antlerless deer on designated either-sex deer hunting days, he or she could still take one antlerless deer on a day not designated an either-sex deer hunting day. Deer of either sex may be taken full season during the early and late archery deer seasons, including the cities of Chesapeake, Suffolk east of the Dismal Swamp line , and Virginia Beach.

Special restrictions may apply during this season. Note: Deer hunters west of the Blue Ridge Mountains may take their season limit of two antlered deer during the early muzzleloading season. In designated areas, EAB regulations would apply. Muzzleloader deer hunters and persons accompanying a muzzleloader deer hunter shall wear a blaze color, except when physically located in a tree stand or other stationary hunting location.

There is no early muzzleloader season in the cities of Chesapeake, Suffolk east of the Dismal Swamp line , or Virginia Beach since it occurs during the general firearms season. DWR has been a steward of the outdoors since , leading in wildlife conservation and inspiring people to value the outdoors and their role in nature. You might be surprised to know that Virginia DWR is primarily funded from sources other than Virginia general tax dollars.

A lot of our funding to help conserve wildlife and habitat comes from public spending on things like fishing and hunting licenses, tags, or stamps, boat registrations, and via a federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition. You too can become a steward of the outdoors by supporting our work or working with us — whether you hunt, fish, and boat or simply enjoy the outdoors.

Your contributions can help us restore wildlife habitat when you become a Restore the Wild member or connect youth to the outdoors through the Virginia Wildlife Grant Program! DWR has begun its biennial process for changing the regulations guiding recreational fishing, aquatic wildlife management, and boating. This process offers the opportunity for citizens to suggest potential regulatory changes during the scoping period. Read more….
